2012 Kid's Give Back Program Award

The Neighborhood Arts Project (NAP)

The Neighborhood Arts Project (NAP) is an innovative summer outreach program of the Harwood Museum of Art which brings quality art activities directly into five Taos’ neighborhoods identified with low-income, at-risk, Spanish speaking, children and families who have limited access to quality summer enrichment programs. The core goals of NAP are to make art accessible, to provide a positive and safe out-of-school experience, to foster exploration and collaboration, and to engage children and their families in creative expression. Under the visionary leadership of Taos arts educator, Siena Sanderson, NAP was created and piloted in 2009 at one site. The overwhelming positive response to the program from the participants fueled us to gradually expand the program with additional sites so that this year we served 5 neighborhoods: a trailer park behind Wal Mart, the Oo-Onah Arts Center at Taos Pueblo, the Taos County Housing Gusdorf Road Housing and Ranchitos Road Housing complexes, and the Arroyo Hondo Community Center.  Neither Taos County nor any of the other sites we work in financially support NAP however we are thrilled to have their enthusiastic approval to let us work on their properties.

NAP is a FREE art outreach initiative which successfully completed its fourth year in early August. The program works in five different sites around Taos bringing creative and  engaging art activities to different sites each day of the week. This summer we served over 300 at-risk, low income, children and families weekly – for a total of over 2500 direct contact experiences.

Taos Fall Arts Festival Board initiated “Kid’s Give Back” programming last year to an enormous success. The board wanted to make a portion of their funds available to art programs in Taos County, so school-age children can explore their creativity through art.

We invited public and private children’s art programs to send a letter of intent, outlining their programs and financial needs. The Taos Fall Arts Festival Board received five submissions and they were all worthy and fun programs. Taos is lucky to have such a giving and talented art community that cares about kids and embracing their inner creativity. The program that was chosen to receive funds in 2011 was the Talpa Community Center’s children’s ceramic program.

All year long they provide a safe place for children to work with clay and glazes, both with mold making and with hand building. We look forward to announcing this year’s program and invite all Taos County public and private children's art programming to submit-check back for updates regularly.
